USA

Some more from the USA, but this time going back even longer to when I was using film. Note the last one, starring Neil Van Vuuren, and with Gillian Anderson on the side of the box!

Here’s a recent one from our little jaunt to the Cotswolds. This was opposite our B&B in Crudwell.

San Francisco

My first reader’s contribution. Thanks Ian.

“Here is my picture of a San Francisco phone booth! While walking by I found it strangely compelling – with it’s shiny case and slot for quarters, so I took a pic. I had just seen the movie “Bullitt”, with Steve McQueen, where the hero makes many phone calls in exactly this type of phone booth…This particular phone was located in the Serramonte Shopping Mall, Daly City, South San Francisco on 28th Dec 2010. I was out shopping for lego :-)”

I tried to find one from the remaining collection that has snow in it, to go with the current feel outside. No luck. Here are a couple to give me warm thoughts (much needed right now) instead:

We recently visited the IoW where there is a funky model village in the town of Godshill. Of corse it has it’s own communications…

This next one is actually a town that was once in Germany. We visited with a friend when there was a Christmas market on.

Design aspects

In my artefacts lecture today we had a visit from Bill Sillar. He enlightened us on the origins for the design of the red UK phone box (among many other things). Giles Gilbert Scott based it on the John Soane Mausoleum in St Pancras Old Churchyard.

As a class we recently visited LARC where the original architectual model for the red phone box is kept. It’s about 1 metre in height. Annoyingly I didn’t take a camera.
